因為前南斯拉夫馬其頓共和國（現為北馬其頓）的所謂「馬其頓人」原是保加利亞人，但在身分危機中他們聲稱自己是希臘人（馬其頓人）。
他們一直受到南斯拉夫共產黨人（後來由VMRO-DPMNE極端民族主義者繼續）的「馬其頓」國家建設進程的影響，他們想要使新成立的「馬其頓社會主義共和國」（1944年）的公民去保加利亞化。現在大多數北馬其頓人聲稱保加利亞和希臘歷史人物都不是保加利亞人和希臘人，而是北馬其頓人！

Because the so-called “Macedonians” of the FYROM (now North Macedonia) are Bulgarians in origin, but in an identity crisis they claim they are Greeks (Macedonians).
They have been subjects to a “Macedonian” nation-building process by the Yugoslav communists (later continued by the VMRO-DPMNE ultranationalists) who wanted to de-Bulgarize the citizens of the newly-founded “Socialist Republic of Macedonia” (1944). Now most North Macedonians claim that both Bulgarian and Greek historical figures are not Bulgarians and Greeks, but North Macedonians!
“After WWII in Macedonia the past was systematically falsified to conceal the fact that many prominent ‘Macedonians’ had supposed themselves to be Bulgarians, and generations of students were taught the pseudo-history of the Macedonian nation. The mass media and education were the key to this process of national acculturation, speaking to people in a language that they came to regard as their Macedonian mother tongue, even if it was perfectly understood in Sofia.” (Michael L. “According to the new Macedonian mythology, modern Macedonians are the direct descendants of Alexander the Great's subjects. They trace their cultural identity to the ninth-century Saints Cyril and Methodius, who converted the Slavs to Christianity and invented the first Slavic alphabet, and whose disciples maintained a centre of Christian learning in western Macedonia. A more modern national hero is Gotse Delchev, leader of the turn-of-the-century Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization (IMRO), which was actually a largely pro-Bulgarian organization but is claimed as the founding Macedonian national movement." Now the North Macedonians are so brainwashed that they decided to spent huge amounts of money to decorate their cities, mainly Skopje, their capital city, using both Greek and Bulgarian historical figures! It's the so-called Skopje 2014 project.
And most of them hate the Bulgarians and the Greeks (and they also hate most of world’s historians for that matter) for telling them the truth. You see, as Friedrich Nietzsche said,
“People don't want to hear the truth because they don't want their illusions destroyed.”
