因此,通过饿死 Mehmetçik(我们称土耳其士兵为小 Mehmets)并不容易。

I have written elsewhere in answers about the Korean War that the story of South Koreans taken prisoner by the communist forces deserves their own Quora answer. This is it.

On June 25, 1950, exactly 69 years from today, the North Korean Korean People’s Army invaded South Korea and started the Korean War. It was a brutal war that killed 3 million people and injured many others. Many people suffered. One story that does not get told often is about the South Korean POWs who did not get to go home.

The POW issue in the Korean War was complicated. People familiar with the war have heard of the mistre

How many people knew about an incredible surgeon who was stationed aboard HMCS Cayuga, part of the Royal Canadian Navy, during the Korean War?

During one of Cayuga’s routine patrol off the shore of North Korea and close to the 38th parallel, she suddenly encountered an approaching Korean junk (a type of ancient Chinese sailing ship that is still in use today). Cayuga’s lookouts could faintly spot a

On September 6, 1945 the internationally recognised Korean Government in exile during WW2 elected Lyuh Woon-hyung (aka Yo Un-hyung) as President of a unified Korea.

When US Forces under General Douglas MacArthur arrived in Korea after WW2 they deposed Lyuh Woon-hyung, removed his Government & installed a US appointed Dictator.

When General Douglas MacArthur arrived and discovered Korea already had a Government, he flew into a rage and took steps to dismantle their authority behind the guise of Trusteeship to manage Elections.

MacArthur conspired with Syngman Rhee from 1946–1947 to create the Repu

Some three million civilian Koreans, North and South, died representing 10% of the population. This is a conservative estimate.

At peak strength, 650,000 South Korean troops served - twice as many as the US - and in total suffered nearly four times the American casualties.

The Korean conflict was a disaster for the Korean people who by far paid the highest price in blood. Somehow Hollywood didn’t get the memo. Funny that…

One unknown fact about the Korean War is that the most highly decorated Infantry Regiment of the war was the 65th Infantry Puerto Rico Army National Guard. They received two Presidential Unit Citations, the Army Unit Citation and the Navy Unit Citation. One Medal of Honor, 177 Distinguished Service Crosses, 2 Navy Crosses,542 Silver Stars, 791 Bronze Stars and 4,092 Purple Hearts. The Regiment had an assigned strength of 3,053 Officers and men.

In 1964, Vietcong commandos sank an American aircraft carrier.

The USNS CARD was an old aircraft carrier commissioned way back in 1942, but well, it was an aircraft carrier nonetheless.

In mid-1963, Vietcong secret intelligence inside the port of Saigon informed their commanders that two aircraft carriers named USNS Core and USNS Card frequently moored in the port. Both ships carried huge numbers of helicopters, fighter jets, armored vehicles, artillery, etc. Every time these ships arrived, security around the port was tripled. A full-strength paratrooper battalion blocked the nearby streets, pa

The last stand of the Filipinos at Yultong.

Outnumbered,Out gunned, and Outflanked. The Filipinos of the PEFTOK held their post firmly. They fought wave after wave of Chinese volunteers. Bolo in one hand, and an M1 Garand on the other. They were the only force to not retreat on the Chinese Spring Offensive. And on the side note, they indirectly covered the retreat of the American 3rd Infantry.

They were short in stature, but they halted a giant.

What I don't know about the Korean War can fill the libraries.

But here is a little something that I discovered in Battle Park in NY: almost all countries in the world participated.

  1. The UN force (led by the US) threat China’s border, Yalu river.

2. Whether intended or by mistake, Some Chinese villages near the border were strifed and bombed.

-Andong (Now Dandong City)

3. US 7th Fleet entered Taiwan strait to show its determination to keep China divided.

Important: it was June 1950, half a year before China involved into Korean war.

Back then it was widely believed that PRC simply letting the UN force advance to Yalu river is showing enemy your weakness. Next the US would help ROC came back from Taiwan with its superior naval power.

4. North Korea offically seek help from China.

Early in the war, the US Army did not have enough rations in theater or in Japan. Once Eighth Army flowed into Pusan and X Corps hit Inchon, they were dangerously low on food, as well as the means to get it there over higher priority items, like ammo.

One account that sticks with me was told by a 2ID soldier that they were allowed a slice of spam per day, and a half canteen cup of rehydrated grapefruit juice.

The massive effort to get troops, weapons and ammo into Korea in August and September had really messed them up on the food front if they had to ration down to that level. It was stabilized

Most of these things aren’t really unknown but rather are glossed over and forgotten

The truly pathetic shape the US military was really in in 1950. It was short of trained manpower, it’s equipment was badly maintained, and it had held no large scale exercises since the end of 1945. The only saving grace was that there was a large pool of experienced manpower to draw from.

The vaunted Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15s shot down less than 150 of the more than 2,000 UN aircraft lost in combat. Soviet pilots alone flying MIG-15s claimed more North American F-86 Sabres shot down than there were Sabres sent t

The Ben Franklin Effect.

Remember this dude? Princely, diplomatic gentleman with those lush steely locks? The smoothest social badass of his time? Ringing any bells?

Ben Franklin unlocked the secret to getting other people to like you. Most of us have been conditioned to think that the way to get someone to like us is by doing nice little favors for them, thereby demonstrating that we are a thoughtf
