I wish that they weren't necessary. I really want to be against them. But, looking at history… it was in every imaginable way the lesser evil.
The Japanese of the time were famously cruel and imperialistic, and they were expected and being trained to fight to the last man, woman, child. I doubt that all of them would have taken up arms… but enough of them would have that the atomic bombs likely saved a lot of Japanese lives.
There's something romantic, heroic, about dying fighting. This was a clear message that there would be no more fighting. There would be no more grand battles and heroic sacrifice. Just death or surrender.
It's not something that should be boasted about or that should be thrown in anyone's faces. It should be regarded with the proper seriousness and respect.
