对于美国蓄意瓦解大英帝国并使其破产的说法,普通英国人怎么看?
I don’t expect they fret much about it. It is generally understood that what dismantled the British Empire in the 20th Century was nationalism and the expense of two world wars. The United States was anti-imperialist from about 1902 on, and declined to support the British Empire after 1945, but it was going to disassemble itself regardless.
The Atlantic Charter stated that ending colonialism and empires were to be the aims of the Western Allies in World War II; Prime Minister Churchill had to explain to his cabinet on returning to London that President Roosevelt did not specifically mean the British Empire
Japan insisted that it was Japan's initiation of the Great East Asian War which broke up the colonies of Britain, France, the Netherlands and the United States in Asia.
FDR meant the British Empire specifically and all empires generally.
Because USA is not an empire.
Apparently you achieve that by genocide of native population and cultural assimilation of settlers.
That was impossible to do in India. But there was no reason to give independence to Australia or Canada, except because they are far away.
Ok so you need to conquer genocide and assimilate neighbouring areas and then you don't have an empire although you have a large country.
Don't forget that the British government borrowed huge sums of money that would benefit a few privileged people.
What does the average Brit think about the claim that USA purposely dismantled and bankrupted the British empire?
