Well you see… there was this tiny little relatively unknown footnote of history called WORLD WAR 2!Japan had attacked the USA at Pearl Harbor, followed by the Philippines and multiple other locations.
This drew the USA into the war.
Seriously? You were not aware of WW2?
For pretty well the same reason America bombed three dozen other Japanese cities knowing it would kill everything. There was a war on.
Did you think those were the only two cities bombed to rubble?
There was in the case of these two cities the added advantage of using fewer aircraft, and bluffing the Japanese into thinking the new weapon was widely available, influencing their decision to quit the war.
