“Hitler’s First War”: Adolf Hitler, The Men of the List Regiment, & WWI, by Thomas Weber.
It varied. Pretty much the same as any soldiers returning to civilian life post war(for those who survived). Some former members of the Bavarian Reserve Regiment 16, “List Regiment” remained friends & maintained contact with Hitler after he came to power, & served in various government positions during the Third Reich era. Some were opposed to Nazism ( including some Jewish members) . Probably the best information & overview on this subject is “Hitler’s First War”: Adolf Hitler, The Men of the List Regiment, & WWI, by Thomas Weber. A very good read. It covers a history of the regiment, biographies of a number of people who served with Hitler & Hilters experiences during the war as a front line infantryman & as a messenger or runner later in the war.
Ernst Moritz Hess a half Jewish officer who served in the same regiment as Hitler, & was briefly Hitler’s company commander. He was protected for a time during the Third Reich era,( & it is unclear to what extent Hitler himself was involved) but was eventually incarcerated in a forced labor camp. Some of his family members died in Auschwitz. He survived the war & post war worked with the Federal railway system, he died in 1983.
Weber's book is, indeed, fascinating! Among other things, I learned that Hitler owed his Iron Cross 1st Class to another Jewish officer, Lt. Hugo Gutmann.
