What do you like about an authoritarian state?

The top ten things about living in an authoritarian state are roughly the same as for a totalitarianism like the Soviet Union:

You’re not responsible for what happens to your country. Your kids won’t be asking you, “How did you guys allow these morons to ruin our health care/ education /defense?” Your conscience is pristine.

You spare a lot of time and effort consumed by civil activity and the fight for your interests. Why did China become so strong and wealthy in so short time? Because they were busy making money, not rallying in the streets, or shouting slogans at each other.

If the regime gets repressive, you can make a few good career moves snitching on your colleagues and neighbors, doing little else.

Noisy minorities, bums and panhandlers disappear from the streets, which visibly enhances the urban environment.

Police violence and corruption disappear from your horizon for good. An effective order maintenance takes its place.

There is much more stability in the corridors of power. Which makes relationship-building much more predictable. You know who you want to make friends with, and how to do it.

The yoke of political correctness is gone. Your rulers, your boss, and the police are the only ones who you might offend—and you always know what they like to hear, and what not.

The media news stream radically improves. You stop seeing depressing news about crime, depravity, incompetence and corruption in the government, deterioration of infrastructure and social services. All this moves to other countries. There will be much, much more of good news, and happy faces.

Your supreme ruler will be the most strong-willed, wise and benevolent of all, a stark contrast to the morons who rule other countries. Nothing can compare to the sense of direction and certainty this will impart you and everyone around.

The history of your country will radically improve. People will discover new bright examples of your past greatness, and find good explanation for things that enemies of your nation tried to harass you for.

The Soviet poster below illustrates one of the greatest advantages of being part of an authoritarian or totalitarian project. However it ends, no one can hold you personally responsible for the outcome. It all was either a massive collective effort, or someone on the top just ordered you to do whatever you were doing.

The top text says, “Everyone who’s honest, join us!” This is a line from a popular Soviet march song “The Hymn of the Democratic Youth of the World,” written in support of the Communist insurgents in Greece in 1947.

A Slavic-looking Soviet man is a bit taller than the rest of the procession. A pretty girl who holds a carnation close to her passionate heart, marches forth very close to him. This, and the fact he’s holding the banner saying “Peace. Democracy, Socialism,” say who in the crowd defines what “honesty” means.

In the US, chaos is our strength. Free enterprise embraces the chaos necessary to allow both individual and the nation in general to rapidly advance in a direction that in end, benefits everyone.

The American Heritage dictionary describes free enterprise as follows:

free enterprise

The freedom of private businesses to operate competitively for profit with minimal government regulation.

An economic system having predominantly private ownership of the means of production, and relying chiefly on market forces to allocate goods and resources and to determine prices, and having a minimum of governmental interference in economic decisions; also, the political doctrine advocating such a system as the economic system of a country.

Similar: market economylaissez-faire economy

Unlike Statist capitalism, free market capitalism has no imposed organized shape or design as does Statist Capitalism, which funnels most all interaction through a bureaucracy.

A good way to visually imagine free enterprise is depicted in this diagram.

The connecting paths are connecting to each other without restriction. The connecting paths can change at any time and in any direction. They may cross paths randomly. There is a noticeable lack of form and controlled direction, hence the term “free”. Free enterprise is an economic system that requires only cooperation and harmony sufficient to result in a series of problem solving, and requires a culture capable of self-sufficiency, self-determination, and self-accountability. Without the underlying culture, free market cannot exist. Beyond cultural issues, the problem solving process of free enterprise is subect only to the laws of supply and demand, and competition from other problem solvers that may have better methods or products.

There are no government “experts” to regulate how and with whom you may do business, or on what terms. There is no one to tell you what you “need”, rather than what you want. This system of free markets, although rare, has been shown to create more wealth, and the underlying all importanat culture of peace and prosperity, than any other system ever created. This is in no small amount the result of having no large bureaucracy expenditure required to “regulate” the citizens. Another factor is wars, expensive in both lives and treasure, do not fit into a model of free markets requiring cooperation and interaction.

You might just write a full answer/post on this

Economics is a pseudoscience predicated on the innate virtuousness of resource maximization, which is often catastrophic. Markets are people making decisions, with no one doing nothing, infinitely many possible decisions for a free market of one, and more possible decisions for a free market of two, with no way of saying how many more than for a market of one or how operations could, would, or should be defined, continuing as the number of decision makers approaches k. Fuzzy decision making and fuzzy optimization, finance (following Fibonacci sequences like agronomy), and industrial psychology are valid subjects, but “economics” is not even a subject.

Lots of words. Very little argument.

I like your style, Dima.

A very dark movie Child 44 depicts life in the USSR in the 50s, no crime and if found was the result of Nazi brainwashing. Excellent cast.

Wow. So nothing would be my fault?

I don't believe that stuff. My wife is a totalitarian and EVERYTHING is my fault!

My experience of freedom — having had the misfortune to be a lifelong resident of the United States, soon to change — is that it means “free-for-all”. We, Russians, do a terrible thing: We send our best, the masters of corruption, to a place where all the corruption is invisible and everyone says there is none. I’m hoping to take Chinese citizenship under Russian nationality. When I hear “freedom”, I instinctively want to dive for cover.

I can see where this would be real attractive to a lot of 2023 US citizens. Sure looks to me like Tytler’s Cycle of Democracy has caught up with us.
