Hm, but couldn't this checking be part of normal great power competition? Did Western Powers hinder Japan through ways they wouldn't attempt with a Western Power?
I think this argument takes for granted that Western Powers were united throughout this period, when this was not really the case
I suppose one example would be the Theodore Roosevelt mediation of the Russo-Japanese war ending up rather in Japan's favour

Yeah, this is why I wrote my answer the way I did. The racial equality clause was morally the right thing to do and would have had long-term benefits, but in 1919, none of the great powers had any reason to back Japan. If you read books about the 1919 peace conference you can see that Japan gave virtually zero explanation for why other powers should buy in to their request. In fact, they were almost entirely silent during the conference sessions and did minimal negotiating. Not exactly Metternich or Talleyrand.
The idea that Japan was the odd one out in 1919 and 1922 is a Japanese nationalist talking point. I'm sure it's been the thesis of more serious historical arguments but I don't think it's the only valid conclusion to draw. (Japan has a much stronger case that its bilateral diplomacy with America was the victim of systemic racism in the 1920s-40s, but that's tangential to the main great power argument)
