Japanese Leaders 'Plotted Murder of Korean Empress'

October 05, 2005 21:02

Japanese prime minister Hirobumi Ito and other Cabinet members had a hand in the brutal 1895 murder of Korea's Empress Myeongseong, documents unearthed in Japan's parliamentary library suggest. Oct. 8 marks the 110th anniversary of the empress' slaying at the hands of a gang of Japanese thugs.

Documentary filmmaker Chung Soo-woong on Wednesday released a June 1895 letter from Japan's justice minister Akimasa Yoshikawa to foreign minister Munemitsu Mutsu. It details a discussion with Japanese charge d'affaires in Korea, Kaoru Inoue. Yoshikawa reports he told Inoue, who would soon return home, to urge prime minister Ito to abandon "the temporary plan" and put "the decisive plan" into action.

Japan has consistently denied any official involvement in the murder, and Korean scholars have suggested a number of theories. The letter could make the murder appear in a whole new light. Yoshikawa writes, "Sounding out Inoue, he does not seem to hate our idea. Therefore, he may oblige us."

Prof. Lee Tae-jin of Seoul National University said Wednesday, "Judging by the information described in the correspondence... the murder of the empress seems to be under discussion at the Japanese Cabinet level. It certainly deserves a lot of attention" as there is little other evidence to prove Ito's involvement.

Japanese Channel Lifts Veil on Korean Empress' Death

August 24, 2009 12:09

A special program including apologies from the descendants of Japanese officials who plotted the assassination of Empress Myeongseong in 1895 will be shown nationwide on TV Asahi in Japan at 10 p.m. Monday. The show unveils the full truth of the assassination and documents a visit by the descendents of the killers to Korea and their apologies some 110 years after the empress also known as Queen Min died.

TV Asahi's Hodo Station, whose viewer ratings of some 20 percent are the highest among Japanese terrestrial channels, plans to air a 14-minute segment about the assassination based on a 2005 documentary by producer Chung Soo-woong, who leads a forum of Korean, Chinese and Japanese TV documentary producers.

Datsumi Kawano (right), a grandson of Empress Myeongseong's assassin Shigeyaki Kunimoto, apologizes to Yi Chung-gil, a grandson of Emperor Gojong at Hongneung, the royal couple's tomb, in Namyangju, Gyeonggi Province in May, 2005.

Chung's film shows how Goro Miura, the Japanese ambassador at the time, mobilized 48 assassins who broke into Gyeongbok Palace on Oct. 8, 1895 and killed the empress.

"The motivation behind the showing of the program was to let people know the buried history between Korea and Japan at a time when Japanese interest in Korea is high due to the influence of the Korean Wave," Chung said.

Kim Yong-woon, a professor at Dankook University who heads the Korea-Japan Cultural Exchange Council, said the film "will cause enormous repercussions in Japan because it squarely deals with a historical event that is regarded in Japan as something that never happened, and portrays descendents of the assassins visiting Korea and apologizing."

Russian Picture 'Shows State Funeral of Empress Myeongseong'

December 03, 2008 09:45

A picture apparently capturing the state funeral of Empress Myeongseong on Nov. 22, 1897 is being stored in the Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography in St. Petersburg. Museum officials currently visiting Korea to sign a cultural exchange agreement with the National Folk Museum of Korea showed pictures of Korea-related artifacts on Tuesday.

The picture was taken by Russian journalist Sergey Syromyatnikov in the streets overlooking Gwanghwamun. It is titled "market streets," but Denis Samsonov, a researcher at the Peter the Great Museum, said the picture was thought to have been taken during the funeral ceremony as there are many people wearing white top hats shown in the picture. The only state funeral that took place in 1897 was that of Empress Myeongseong, or Queen Min, two years and two months after her assassination by the Japanese.

"Very few pictures of the funeral of Empress Myeongseong have survived," said Prof. Han Young-woo of Ewha Womans University. "The picture seems to show crowds walking up to Gwanghwamun when the empress' coffin was carried toward Dongdaemun from Deoksu Palace."
