I state to Mr. MacArthur:
Congratulations on Your Excellency's bountiful happiness.
Ordinarily I am one who breaks down the barriers of nationality, and I even smiled at reports of Your Excellency's high praise for American soldiers.
But on the night of October 17 at 7 PM.
, I was in the women's side of a public bath on Asakusa Dori [avenue] in Muko Yanagihara 2-chome-a person bombed out by the war, washing away the day's toil from my tired bodywhen a commotion began:
"An American soldier is peeping.
" I could not be lieve that an American soldier with any intellectual pride would do this, but.
I happened to see your country's soldiers taking turns laughing and peeping from a small window by the side of the bath.
If Your Excellency were to hear about this incident, I knew you would be deeply aggrieved, and I secretly felt sorry for you.
You have said that Japanese soldiers may have done so and so, and I do not wish to negate your words, but not all of the young Japanese men sent to the front were uncivilized.
There were many who were capable of human reflection and cherished refined aesthetics.
Your Excellency, please bear in mind that there are some among your soldiers who have the lowest tastes.
Women of your country and my country too are all God's children.
I pray the best of health to you.
Butsuko
