Honorable Sir:

I raise three banzais to General MacArthur and extend my congratulations on the successful stationing of your country's troops.

I have been studying amateur name divination as a hobby for the past twenty years, and my divinations of famous people's fates have appeared in local newspapers and magazines.

After the beginning of the Greater East Asia War, when Japan quickly lost its edge in the war in the Pacific and suffered repeated defeat in a succession of battles, I realized that victory for Japan was impossible.

 Through the divination of the name "Amerika" [four Chinese characters that have traditionally been used to designate America in written Japanese] and the general's name, as explained below, I concluded that it would be absolutely impossible for the Japanese military and government to lead the people to victory in a final, decisive battle on the Japanese mainland.

 Since Japan has declared its unconditional surrender, I humbly believe that my divination was accurate.

I hereby take the liberty of offering the results of the divination of your country's and the general's honorable names, in place of a message of comgratulations on the successful stationing of your troops.

 I would be most hon ored if you were to take some pleasure from this letter.

Divination

1. The character a in Amerika is the same as the a in Greater East Asia (Asia).

 The character me in Amerika is "rice," and the ancient name for Japan was "The Land of Bountiful Rice.

" The ri in Amerika is "increase," which means the rice will increase naturally.

 The ka in Amerika is "addition," which means the abundant annual harvest of rice will become larger.

 In essence, the meaning of the name "Amerika" is the same as Japan, and the name has a mystical connotation that America will come to Japan and rule Asia.

2. To give a reading of the honorable name of General Makkāsā [MacArthur], I have transliterated it with the Japanese characters matsu (pine), ka (happiness), and sa (to assist).

 The pine tree traditionally has been treasured in Japan as the evergreen that never changes its color.

 The first three days of the new year are called matsu no uchi (days of pine), with fresh pine boughs decorating the doorways of houses throughout Japan.

 At wedding ceremonies and other celebrations and banquets, pine tree arrangements are always displayed or a painted scroll with pine trees is hung to celebrate the occasion.

 The character ka is used in Japan for all celebrations and felicitations to mean "happiness.

" It is a most auspicious character.

 The character sa means to enhance the beautiful green of the pine and increase happiness.

 It is difficult to express, but the result is that the unchanging beauty of the pine will continue for a thousand and ten thousand years.

 The meaning of this divination is that General MacArthur will continue to rise in stature and position in the years to come.

I humbly believe that if the people of the earth desire true happiness there must be world peace, and I am one who desires and loves world peace absolutely.

 America is the only country that can create world peace and civilization, and I praise the greatness of your country without cease.

 In closing,for the sake of world peace and the well-being of Japan, I pray to God for your good health.
