Japan propagated the Greater East Asian War as a way to liberate its Asian colonies, but why didn't it occupy Hawaii and restore the Hawaiian Kingdom after Pearl Harbor?
And by “Greater East Asian War” you mean the Second Sino-Japanese War which merged with World War 2 when Japan attacked US, British, and Dutch territories, right? I just want to be sure I understand the terminology.
Well first, Japan was not fighting to “liberate its Asian” colonies. It was fighting to create a colonial system similar to the system they saw Europeans had built in the 19th century. They wanted other Asian countries to ‘feed’ Japan’s industries to provide greater wealth for the Empire of Japan. There was no liberation involved when the so-caller liberators then occupy and subjugate the population.
Second, Japan did not care about any Hawaiian Kingdom. When Japan “liberated” Manchuria in 1932 they established a puppet government and installed a pliant figurehead as ‘emperor’ in name only.
Third, Tokyo to Honolulu is about 3,300 nautical miles (6,111 km or 3,797 miles). That was a long way to go, even in 1941, without being detected. They did it partially because no one in the US military had the imagination to believe the Japanese could do it (yes, racism).
It was a big effort to conduct an air raid on the US Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor. An invasion fleet would have needed to be significantly larger. THEN, Japan would need to protect that route in order to resupply the troops on the Hawaiian Islands. That also means a fleet and air arm to patrol the waters around the islands in order to keep them.
Fourth, the attack on the US Pacific Fleet based at Pearl Harbor was only an air raid because it wasn’t the real objective. The real objective was British Malaya, British Burma, the Dutch East Indies, and the Philippines. And, the Philippines was only included as a major objective because the US Asiatic Fleet based in Manila and the accompanying land-based aircraft could control traffic through the South China Sea.
Why was that important? Because Japan needed the oil, tin, rubber, and other natural resources from British Malaya, British Burma, and the Dutch East Indies that the US refused to sell them and because the US and UK had frozen Japanese assets (money) in US/UK banks so Japan could not buy from anyone else using that money.
Japan did invade and take Wake Island and Guam in the North Pacific but only to act as early warning bases if the US attacked Japan through the North Pacific. The Japanese thrust through the Marianas, Solomon’s, etc toward Fiji was just an attempt to make it much harder for the US and Australia / New Zealand to coordinate attacks against Japan. Japan didn’t really want those islands because they didn’t really have resources Japan needed.
Japan did attack Singapore and Hong Kong because those ports could be used by their enemies to control the local seas. None of that was a war of “liberation”; it was a “resource” war.
Hawaii offered no natural resources Japan needed either. Zero. Certainly not worth the effort an invasion force would require.
Okay, then. Properly answered and in more detail than the OP was expecting.
