Unify is the wrong word. Stalin wanted Communism to occupy and brutally govern all countries in this world, not just China, Korea, and Vietnam in Asia.
Why didn't Stalin and Mao get on?
Both Stalin and Mao were consummate Communists. They constantly tried to outmaneuver each other, but rarely could pull it off because both read each other like an open book.
Before WW2, when Mao had a chance to murder Chiang Kai-shek, Stalin pressed him not to do it. Mao took offense at Stalin constantly holding Kuomintang as his Plan B until he finally chased them off to Taiwan.
NKVD and MGB constantly tried to infiltrate Mao’s closest circle. Only the personal file of Mao from before 1943 kept in the Soviet archives consists of 15 thick tomes.
True to his style, Stalin kept humiliating Mao in order to remind him of his junior position
After WW2, Stalin dismantled and took to the USSR at least 1,000 industrial and power plants from Manchuria, which Mao considered Chinese property.
Before Stalin got the A-bomb, he made plans of avoiding a direct confrontation with the US in China by a smoldering proxy war between Mao and the Kuomintang with Yangtze river as the battlefront. His help to Mao was scaled in order to keep it as a low-intensity conflict, which irritated Mao.
Stalin decided to attack South Korea without holding proper council with Mao, and then unloaded the entire mess into his lap.
Stalin promised to make up for the confiscated Manchurian assets by providing help in the industrialization of China. However, he took his time to implement it. The bulk of Soviet help to PRC was delivered by Khrushchev.
Mao got very sick during his visit to Moscow in 1949. It happened during a major flare-up of the enmity between Yugoslavia and the USSR. Rumors have it that during the negotiations Stalin said, “We’re afraid that there are Titoist tendencies among our Chinese comrades as well, don’t you think?” There is no direct evidence that Mao considered this episode as an assassination attempt, but he was reported to say later about that time: “We all felt a huge question mark hovering above our heads”.
Mao disliked Khrushchev's de-Stalinization but liked his bashing of Stalin’s person. He was reported to approve Khrushchev's anti-Stalin speech at the 20th party congress in the USSR. According to some sources, Mao allegedly said, "I myself will write a book about Stalin sometime, and it will be much worse than all the past and future books about Stalin."
Below, a Soviet poster from 1949 titled “Let the unbreakable friendship and cooperation of the Soviet and Chinese people live on and grow stronger!” The alleged cordiality of our relations is undermined on the picture by stiff postures of the two men and Chairman Mao’s stiff face. The works of Lenin he holds in the hand also indicate that he has to do a lot of homework before he gets entitled to the splendid uniform and the large stars on the shoulders of Generalissimus Stalin.
