  In addition to finding and exploiting ‘warlike’ peoples in South Asia, the British had maximised the effectiveness of their control by manipulating tensions between different ethnic and religious groups.

  This prevented troops to a considerable degree from identifying with the people they were meant to suppress, and in cases of active hostility between the groups that formed the troops and those that made up the populace, led to a degree of brutality that both served colonial interests of control and shifted hostility from the British to other South Asian peoples.
