1944 年 4 月 19 日的这一天。
为了阻止美国B-29轰炸机从中国桂林和柳州基地轰炸国土，夺取北平港铁路，日本陆军中国远征军总司令羽田俊禄元帅以超过 450,000 人的力量发动了 Ichi-Go（第一）攻势。
这是自 1937-38 年以来对中国发动的最大规模攻势，目的是在韩国和河内之间开辟一条安全的陆路通道。
该行动将使日本能够在不使用美国控制的海上航线的情况下接收物资和战略装备。
约15万日军离开河南，沿京汉铁路迅速南下。
国民党势力多了一个他们没有预料到的敌人，他们伪装成饥肠辘辘的中国农民，为多年来遭受的虐待和剥夺而报复。
5月底，35万日军继续行军。8 月，他们占领了广西，到 11 月，所有美国空军基地都被摧毁。在重庆这个“自由中国”的临时首都和蒋介石的避难所，到处都是恐慌。
1944 年 12 月，进攻突然停止。日本不得不面对美国在 1944 年 10 月的莱特海战中取得的连续胜利，当时美国人击沉了日本舰队的残骸。此外，日本输掉了缅甸战役，从而开辟了通往重庆的补给线。
这场为期九个月的战役对蒋介石和他的军队来说是灾难性的，他们因损失 500,000 人而蒙羞和虚弱——是日本人的 20 倍。
面对日本人和傀儡政府军队的入侵企图，共产党人在中国北部和中部控制下的地区稳定下来，提高了共产党人的威望。
毛泽东领导的共产党人将填补日本人在敌对行动停止和国民党日子屈指可数后留下的真空。
