Anand Nyamdavaa

What are some things that people are unaware about Joseph Stalin?

One of Stalin’s most enduring and least understood legacies in Mongolia is the creation of the movie making studio “Mongol Kino.” It was founded in 1935 and the first movie to come out of the studio in 1936 was appropriately called “Mongol Son.”[1] The picture above is from a scene of that movie.

I always thought strange that a movie studio would be created during the 30s. In 1930s Mongolia experienced mass arrests and detentions of lamas and political elites. By some measures, 40–50,000 people were shot during those times. Half of them were senior monks. Many more were imprisoned. It was definitely not a time for movies.

Reading from the protocols of Stalin meeting with Mongolian high level officials it is painfully clear how deep Buddhism was rooted in Mongolia. When Stalin asked which was more respectable, Mongolian communist party (MPRP) or Lamas, Mongolian Prime Minister Genden had to concede that the Lamas were more respected. Stalin’s answer was brutal, destroy buddhism as it was impeding socialism.

One of Stalin’s other suggestions was to show movies to the people. Let them (people) see if the lamas could show similar magic.

For the mass of illiterate herders movies were magic. So the purpose of screening movies was to show that Socialism had more magic than religion and it was done by regular people like themselves. This is why creation of a movie studio was high on agenda.

I wrote about the book in more detail:

Anand Nyamdavaa's answer to How intelligent was Joseph Stalin?

Well it was not about how much Buddhism was rooted in Mongolia rather how much Lamas had power over the people. I read your other answer and it clearly show the situation of Afghanistan today. The Afghan clerics has so much power that no matter how patriotic a state is and how good it treats its citizens as long as clerics are not happy they can overthrow the Afghan state. This is a big problem.

Then u have to work with the cleriks

The clerics are the protectors of the backward status que. They benefit from it greatly. How can we work with them and convince them to give up their power for the good of Afghan people. It is not possible.

The only other way would be as we did with lamas in the 30s. So have to find a way

Yeah I hope we find a way. Just out of curiosity is there a central institution that governs Buddhism in Mongolia? Something like Church of England.

yes there is central monastery, Gandan. but its not as hierarchical as catholic church

I always think that movie is the powerful tools for propaganda. On the other side of the fence, the British has sponsored free movie screening (called Wayang Pacak - Outdoor cinema - Wikipedia) that moves from one village to another as part of their tactic to fight communist insurgency in my country. The movie they show was usually a harmless popular movie at that time (harmful to communist ideology though as it mostly shows the splendour of “free nation”), the audience will need to stand for God Save the Queen - Wikipedia and later after independence for the national anthem Negaraku - Wikipedia and watch a few minutes of propaganda materials from the British before they got to see their favourite movie stars, fair deal I must say.

In Indonesia, we used to have this kind of screenings as well. It was called Layar Tancap.

Out of all Arts, the most important to us is Cinema - J.Stalin. Thank you for very interesting information.

Did anyone stand up to Joseph Stalin?
Yes, the leader of Yugoslavia Marshall Tito had quite the feud with “the man of steel”. In fact Stalin sent numerous assassin's after Tito, which prompted this bold statement to the most deadly man in history “Stalin: Stop sending people to kill me! We’ve already captured five of them, one with a bomb and another with a rifle… If you don’t stop sending killers, I’ll send one to Moscow, and I won’t have to send another!”

I hear he was quite the looker back then, not many people know that he never always looked like a Dictator version of Super Mario. When he wasn’t destroying lives in his later life he was breaking hearts in his younger days.

Stalin was a run-of-the-mill Bolshevik who devoted himself to the destruction of the Russian Empire. Yet we do know that he burned with an unwavering hatred of this patriarchal society, in which extreme inequality and poverty predominated.
