维金格行动（英语："Viking"）是德国海军在第二次世界大战期间于1940年2月对北海的一次出动。德国海军和德国空军之间沟通和合作不力，导致两艘德国军舰在友军的轰炸和德国或英国的水雷下丧生[1] 。

为了说明情况，这次行动的目的是夺取阿留申群岛中的基斯卡岛，该岛在战争初期就被日本占领。
请看上面，基斯卡岛是一个相当大的岛屿，就在红色虚线（日本的前进极限）的左边。问题是，由于意识到他们无法保卫该岛，日本军队在发生任何真正的战斗之前就全部撤出了。

Operation Wikinger (English: "Viking") was a German naval sortie into the North Sea by the Kriegsmarine in February 1940 during the Second World War. Poor inter-service communication and cooperation between the Kriegsmarine and the Luftwaffe resulted in the loss of two German warships through friendly fire bombing and German or British mines.[1]

You may notice that, in the belligerents section, Japan is “not present”. That is because they were not actually there. Meaning, the United States and Canada suffered over 300 casualties fighting literally no one.
Think they were unlucky yet?
To give a little context, the operation was aimed at taking the island of Kiska in the Aleutian Islands that had been under Japanese occupation since fairly early in the war.
See above that Kiska is the fairly large island just on the left side of the dotted red line (the limit of Japanese advance). The issue was that, realising they couldn’t defend the island, Japanese forces all withdrew before there was any real fighting.
Unfortunately, the Americans and Canadians were not aware of this. And so, on August the 15th, 1943, the invasion began, in spite of the lack of actual enemies present there:
The issue was that the Canadian and American forces landed at different beaches. When they encountered each other on the island, they—rather unluckily—mistook each other for Japanese forces and opened fire leaving 28 Americans and 4 Canadians dead and around 100 more injured.
To make matters worse, the USS Abner Read (an American destroyer) had equally poor luck and hit a stray Japanese mine, inflicting a further 71 deaths and 47 injuries, with the ship itself damaged badly.
And that is how, in the Pacific theatre of the Second World War, through a combination of misinformation and incredibly poor luck, American and Canadian forces managed to suffer over 300 casualties with a destroyer damaged, while not actually fighting anyone at all.
Talk about bad luck.
