This is passage from the book The Yamato dynasty: the secret history of Japan's imperial family by Sterling Seagrave pgs. 205:
“Having warned Hirohito personally, MacArthur put Fellers to work saving the emperor. The emperor was now their hostage, so they had to keep him on the throne, to benefit from the leverage. Unlike earlier episodes of "capture the emperor" this time he was the hostage of an alien power. The imperial family understood this, and recognized that the only way to remove MacArthur's yoke was to get Hirohito to abdicate. Crown Prince Akihito, having been a child during the war, would not be vulnerable to the same extortion. Family interests aside, many Japanese said then and later that it would have been better for the country if Hirohito had accepted blame and abdicated, to put war guilt behind all of them. MacArthur had to prevent abdication at all costs. He needed a frightened Hirohito, who would agree to be made over as a humble democrat. The more democratic the emperor looked, the better MacArthur, who still entertained presidential ambitions, would look. Making secret use of Hirohito would assure his success as America's proconsul in Japan. The American public would only see the carefully staged image of MacArthur as a father figure guiding Hirohito to Western democracy. MacArthur was not alone in profiting from Hirohito's cooperation. Washington bureaucrats and politicians. Wall Street financiers, Japanese bureaucrats, gangsters and business magnates, all had a stake in the emperor's neck. The throne still had a magic cachet that could be used to achieve a variety of special effects”.
