most writings about NGo Dinh Diem cast him as a cruel dictator and puppet of the US. This book takes an opposite view and I agree with it.
I think President Ngộ Dinh Diem was a true Patriot with the real “Mandate From Heaven” whose legacy has been stolen by the lying press of the time; then the following writers have just piled on without evidence of their unfairness to Ngộ Dinh Diem.
President Diem was overthrown after US President John F Kennedy gave the nod… JFK seemed shocked that The Diem Brothers were also tortured and murdered rather than given safe passage to leave Vietnam…
US and South Vietnam could have won if the had cooperated with Ngộ Đình Diem and let Diem continue to run the show his way. The US should have stayed with building up the South Vietnamese Forces and letting them carry out the “heavy lifting” of their own war. I think General Creighton Abrams was the only Commander that understood that. But it was too late. The US had decided to find a way out rather than actually win.
The North Vietnamese and VC could hardly believe their good fortune when they saw the US turn on Diem and murder him. There was really no other Vietnamese on their side who could take his place.
