5th September 2022 – (London) Michele Chung, a Hong Kong social activist with American nationality who was the member and emcee of the dissolved Civil Human Rights Front demonstration, was interrogated by British Immigration for two days when she entered the U.K. recently, during which she suffered two “panic attacks”. The officials also questioned whether Chung had any trouble with the police because of her participation in the demonstrations over the years. She denied. In the end, the British authorities refused her entry. The notice stated that Chung admitted that “I have never been oppressed by the Hong Kong authorities because of the demonstrations.” She said that it was her own decision not to return to Hong Kong.

“Voice of America” ​​published an interview with Chung on the 3rd of this month. She revealed that she planned to enter the U.K. from the Netherlands recently. When asked by Immigration officers, she said that she was worried that she would face political persecution, so she would not return to Hong Kong , but she told the officials that she was only traveling to the U.K. and had purchased a departure ticket, but the Immigration officers did not believe that she would leave after entering the country, questioned that she had never been persecuted due to the Hong Kong protests, and concluded that she was not a genuine visitor.


Chung recalled that when she returned to the station the next day, another Customs officer, Hill, asked her to search her luggage and carefully interrogated her itinerary again. According to the notice of refusal of entry provided by Chung, Hill confirmed that her luggage was all her belongings.


Chung also pointed out that when the Customs officer asked her when she started participating in the demonstrations in Hong Kong, she replied that it started in 2003. The Customs officer later asked if she had any trouble with the police because of her participation in the Hong Kong demonstrations over the years, and she answered no. According to the refusal of entry issued by the British authorities, Hill pointed out that Chung admitted “she has never been in trouble with the authorities because of the demonstrations”.
