中國為什麼要在所羅門群島建立軍事存在？

 美國副國務卿雪蔓上週末訪問索羅門群島，昨天（7日）參加由美方主辦的二次世界大戰瓜達卡納島戰役八十週年紀念活動，索羅門總理蘇嘉瓦瑞沒有現身，被當地媒體直斥「冷落」美國。

索羅門星報報導，蘇嘉瓦瑞（Manasseh Sogavare）7日原本要在這場晨間紀念活動發表演說，結果沒有現身，日本、澳洲和紐西蘭都派官員參加。

Firstly, they’re not. Solomons is asking China to help them with security and nowhere does it mention a military base.

Anyway, on to the answer. The Solomons government got rid of their Taiwan embassy and got China in right, mainly because China is now their biggest trading partner.

The US response was to send $52 million (give or take) to Malaita, which is an Island basically in rebellion. Malaita then boated over to the main Island and had an anti government anti China riot, razing Chinatown to the ground and killing some Chinese people. I think they had a go at parliament as well. The beginnings of an attempted coup.

Now the Solomons government doesn’t want to be overthrown, but their military and Police are almost non existent.

Who do they turn to for security? The US who is funding the insurgency? Their lackeys in the Pacific - Australia and New Zealand? Or their biggest trading partner - China.

The Solomons government is not stupid, doesn’t trust the western governments who are funding rebellion and so went for China. And who can blame them.

So in the end the blame for a stronger Chinese presence in the Pacific lies fully at the feet of the US and their failed attempt at a wee colour revolution in the Solomon Islands. Which is what you call a backfire.
