In his acceptance speech at the Memorial Coliseum, John Kennedy tackled concerns about his Catholicism head-on. “I am fully aware of the fact that the Democratic Party, by nominating someone of my faith, has taken on what many regard as a new and hazardous risk—new, at least, since 1928,” he began. His nomination reflected the delegates’ trust in the fairness of voters, he went on. “I hope that no American, considering the really critical issues facing this country, will waste his franchise by voting either for me or against me solely on account of my religious affiliation. It is not relevant.”

"

What his address is most remembered for was his signature call for what he called a New Frontier. “But the New Frontier of which I speak is not a set of promisesit is a set of challenges,” he said. “It sums up not what I intend to offer the American people, but what I intend to ask of them.”

The next night, as a special treat, her parents let Nancy choose a restaurant for dinner. She picked Romanoff’s in Beverly Hills, a favorite of Hollywood’s old guard. When the waiter brought the menus, her father blanched. “Wow, look at these prices,” he protested. “How did you ever find this place? Why are we here?” His daughter replied, defensively, “Well, this is Hollywood and it costs a lot of money here.”

Then, suddenly, all was forgiven. “The door opens and in walks John F. Kennedy and his entourage, and all of a sudden this place is perfect,” Pelosi recalled. “He came right over to the table. ‘Mr. Mayor, how are you? Thanks for all you’re doing to help and all the rest.’” She was glad she was wearing her “Youth for Kennedy” pin. And the pricey menu? After JFK’s greeting, her father no longer minded. “The prices just seemed to melt,” she said.

In Washington the next January, she attended Kennedy’s inauguration in the freezing cold, eight inches of snow covering the ground.
