And Nancy D’Alesandro, class of 1962, the daughter of the mayor of Baltimore, as Nancy Pelosi would become Speaker of the House. The inscription next to her graduation portrait in her senior yearbook: “Solemn she is rarely seen yet thoughts and deep are there.”
With the benefit of hindsight, Jeanne Lynch recognized clues in the political science classes they shared for the path her friend would one day take. “Nancy was always fascinated with the process,” she told me. “The rest of us were into policy, economics, socialism—you know, all that kind of stuff. But Nancy was into how you get the votes out, how you get control, how you get the power. I thought that was the boring end of it, and I thought, ‘Well, I don’t know why she’s so interested in that.’”
"
Years later, she understood why. “Once it came out that she was taking over the Democratic Party in California, you knew she was on her way, and it suddenly all fit,” Lynch said. “It was like the pieces of a puzzle falling into place.”
