I was an aircraft mechanic in the Air Force and I know of a small relay, about an inch long and a half inch wide, that is $20,000 to order just 1.
I currently work as an avionics tech at a big company that repairs USCG, Army, Spain, and government aircraft. We have some contactors that jumped from being $20,000 (which is already a chunk) to $60,000 in the past year. Just for one. It's wild.
I come from manufacturing and I’ve seen them for like $10k. Like yeah, it’s ridiculous. But it’s a very specific part. It’s not “any jack with a high school diploma” it’s that the bushings are very specific to that job with a very specific composition and material strength designed to do the only thing that they are made to do: fit those parts that you need them for. The outer diameter is specific. The inner diameter is specific. The thickness is specific. The pitch of the edges is specific. And it probably directly from the manufacturer of that specific jet engine.
That’s quality control. And if you need your engine to work the way you need it to, then those are the kinds of prices you have to pay. I’ve run into countless problems with buying aftermarket parts. And yes, the smallest stupidest part can make a big difference. You want your shit to run? Apples for apples. And I’m not going to decommission a billion dollar plane over $90k of parts.
TLDR this guy is clearly complaining to complain or doing something political.
