日本「差點」獲得戰時原子彈

一位日本核物理學家表示，他和他的許多同事相信他們可以在第二次世界大戰期間製造核武。甚至還計劃向西太平洋島嶼塞班島的美國基地投擲原子彈。唯一阻礙他們的是缺乏資源。
「我們在 1945 年就相信我們能夠製造出原子彈，」鈴木達三郎上週在廣島原子彈爆炸 50 週年臨近之際透露。 “但我們必須更加努力。”
此階段的關鍵問題是從鈾 238 中分離出足夠的可裂變鈾 235。在採用多種分離方法的美國，加州大學柏克萊分校的 3000 噸迴旋加速器每天生產 2.8 克鈾 235。
在日本，問題之一是尋找建造迴旋加速器的鋼材。 「我們的一名軍官建議我們應該廢棄五到六艘重型巡洋艦來建造一個 5 萬噸級的設施，」鈴木說。但這個想法遭到了研究計畫負責人仁科良雄的否決。他希望日本的核武計畫能夠更有序、更循序漸進地進行。
