Well the Japanese did win the attack on Pearl Harbor, sinking six battleships and two destroyers, and damaging/crippling three battleships, three cruiser, and a few smaller vessels. Air attacks from Soryu sank the decommissioned battleship Utah and a minelayer, and crippled the light cruisers Helena and Raleigh. Then dive bombers from Hiryu sank the battleship Arizona in a devastating magazine explosion while attacks from Akagi and Kaga sank the battleships Oklahoma and West Virginia, planes from Kaga and Soryu sank the battleship California, planes from Akagi wrecked the destroyers Cassin and Downes, and finally Kaga alone sank the battleship Nevada.
Hiryu anchored off Yokosuka in July of 1939.
However, while they won the battle, they could have inflicted far more damage than they actually did. Mostly, the Japanese air groups were mostly focused on sinking enemy ships, and ignored the vast US oil fields that could have used some burning. They also didn’t hit the repair yards, and which would have significantly halted the process of raising three of the six battleships sunk (Nevada, California, and West Virginia). I’ve also heard that there were a good three or four cruisers which were drydocked for repairs, and were exposed to explosive ammunition, fuel, munitions Midway style, but none of the Japanese aircraft blasted those cruisers as they were all focused on sinking battleships, and destroying those cruisers really would have helped out with the Guadalcanal campaign.
I’m pretty sure the Japanese deeply regretted not destroying the heavy cruiser USS San Francisco, especially IJN Hiei, Furutaka, and Fubuki.
Ultimately was a “shot in the foot”, a risk calculated the US response would be limited.
Ox battlrshipy sunk, all were as about as old as a Ford Model T.
Attacking the oil depots & repair facilities made more sense.
It was fruitess. Esp with thd nrw DKotas, Iowas & carriers on order. More sense in just attacking Malaya & Dutch East Indies & seeing how FDR respondef
Also not to mention one of only 4 fleet oilers capable of refueling other ships at sea that was sitting on battleship row but ignored because the Japanese only wanted to attack warships McMahon style. That oiler was sunk at Coral Sea, but only AFTER refueling the carriers which allowed those carriers to stay on station long enough to engage the Japanese to a draw which meant Japan only had 4 carriers at Midway instead of 6.
Pearl Harbor was the classic Mahan inspired battle the Japanese sought. They called it the Kantei Kissen. Destroy the US battle line, and the US seeks terms.
It was just like Drachinifel said-
It was like the dog that chased the car. What is the dog going to do with the car if he catches it?
Yamamoto caught he car.
The US didn’t want to discuss terms.
OK, so now what????

What strategies could the Japanese have used to win at Pearl Harbor? How could the Americans have countered the surprise naval attack?

so very true-
